Behind the Brush: A Recap (Part 2)

Welcome back! Now that my summer break is officially over, it’s time to continue the story of Behind the Brush. This campaign was a chance to revisit the moments, inspiration, and creative sparks behind 12 paintings that hold a special place in my heart. In Part 1, we explored Days 1 through 6—now let’s dive into the stories of Days 7 through 12.

Day 7: Kākāpō no.1

Looking back at my earlier work, I can see how much I’ve grown when it comes to this piece. Kākāpō marks a new step in my journey with pastels. I’ve really found my rhythm with them over the past year, and now I can’t imagine finishing a watercolour piece without that beautiful, chalky texture.

I will always use one of my votes for the kākāpō in the Bird of the Year competition. I just love the kākāpō.

Day 8: Valley Trail

On day 8, I took us back to the Routeburn Track with Valley Trail.

It was Day 2 of our hike. The morning was crisp, and the climb ahead felt like a true beast. I remember looking back at the valley again and again as we climbed, and just soaking in the view. It was so peaceful and beautiful, and that’s what I wanted to capture in this piece.

The colors I used, needed to reflect both the stillness and the energy I felt during the hike. It’s a small piece, but it packs so much of that peaceful morning in the valley.

I’m so happy with how Valley Trail turned out—each time I look at it, I’m reminded of that beautiful morning on the Routeburn.

Day 9: On the Water no.1

Milford Sound has always been a place I dreamed of painting. My first visit didn’t disappoint—and neither did my second. Inspired by towering cliffs, shimmering waters, and the feeling of being completely dwarfed by nature, On the Water No. 1 captures all of it.

This piece started in my sketchbook with loose, free sketches, where I began exploring scale and composition. Adding the tiny boat brought everything into perspective—a way to show the grandeur of the landscape.

Day 10: Dappled Light

Inspired by several mornings spent stuck in traffic in the same spot, Dappled Light is a reminder that even the most mundane moments can hold magic. The light and shadow play of the trees was an unexpected moment of beauty during an otherwise dull commute to work.

There are many layers under this one - it took a long time to get right. I had never attempted a scene like it, so I knew it would be a challenge to capture the essence I wanted, but I got there eventually!

Dappled Light is a celebration of finding joy in the small, unexpected corners of life.

Day 11: Lion Rock no.1

Day 11 was a trip to our beautiful west coast beach, Piha!

This painting isn’t just about a view—it’s about feeling. The heat of a summer day on your skin and the sound of waves crashing against the shore. That’s what 'Lion Rock No. 1' captures—a moment on Piha’s iconic black sand beach, with the powerful Lion Rock watching over it all. Warmth, energy, and the beauty of New Zealand’s rugged coast.”

A place thats inspired more than one of my paintings over the years!

Day 12:

I cheated a little a didn't highlight just one piece on day 12 - I celebrated them all. As such, now that I'm writing this blog post, I don't actually have anything for day 12 to go into....

Reflecting on the Journey

Revisiting these 12 (11) paintings through Behind the Brush was an incredible experience. It reminded me of why I create and how each piece carries its own story, waiting to connect with someone new. If you missed the campaign in December, I hope this recap gives you a taste of what it was all about. And if one of these paintings speaks to you, some are still available on my website, ready to find their place in your home.

Here’s to a new year of creativity, connection, and plenty of paint-covered hands. Thanks for being part of the journey!
